17. Mother Teresa
Mother Teresa is famous for her
humanitarian and charitable activities. She was a real mother for the helpless
and the distressed. Mother Teresa was born at Skopje
in Macedonia
in 27 August 1910. Her father was an Albanian builder. At the age of 18 he
joined the Order of the Sisters of Our Lady of Loreto in Ireland. The she served the ailing
people. In 1928 she came to India
and started living there. She is remembered for her benevolent activities. In
1931 she began teaching at a Calcutta
girls’ school. In 1952 she founded “Nirmal Hriday” which has still been working
to help the people. For orphan and street children she founded an orphanage in
1953. From 1957 she and her missionary started working for the lapers. For her
outstanding contribution she was awarded Nobel Prize in 1979. She visited our
loving Bangladesh,
too. She breathed her last in 5 September 1997. People all over the world
commemorate her with great respect.

A
postman is a very familiar figure in our society. He brings us news from our
near and dear ones living in distant places. He is known to all sections of
people for his services. Even a child can instantly recognize him when he
knocks at the door. He is known to us all for his traditional uniform and
dress. He usually wears khaki uniform supplied by the postal department. He
always carries a bag on his shoulder containing letters, money orders, parcels
and other postal articles for delivery. He is seen to carry an umbrella over
his head during the rain and the summer. He performs a lot of duties. His daily
work begins in the post office with the sorting of letters, parcels, money
order etc. After collecting letters, parcels, money orders etc. from the post
office he goes out on his beat. The postman in a town goes from house to house
to deliver them. He generally drops the letters into the private letterboxes.
Where there is no letterbox he drops the letters through some openings of the
doors. A village postman goes on his beat twice or thrice a week. He comes to
the market place on hat day and delivers letters, parcels, money orders etc. to
their addressees. He is very punctual, dutiful, sincere, honest and
hard-working. He never neglects his duties though he is ill paid, ill clad. In
all weather, whether good or bad he performs his duties sincerely and honestly.
He is a good man and a good friend to us. He brings news from our friends and
relatives. We always eagerly wait for him and hope that he will bring some good
news for us. Sometimes, he brings bad news and makes us unhappy and sad. But
when he brings good news our heart fills with pleasure and joy. This is why the
postman is always welcomed by all. Really a postman is a very useful person to
us. He performs the most responsible job in the society. But it is a matter of
great regret that he gets a very poor salary for which he always remains in
want and poverty. We hope our government would take immediate steps to improve
his lot.
19. The postman Nt
Postman is a person who delivers
letters, money orders, and other postal articles to the proper addressees. The
postman is a familiar figure. The postman who serves in the town puts on a
khaki dress. But the postman who works in the village has no particular dress.
He puts on plain dress. The postman has a definite area where he has to go. The
postman carries across his shoulders a bag containing letters, parcels and
money orders and other postal articles. He goes from one house to another to
deliver letters, money orders and other postal articles to the proper
addressees. The postman is very sincere and dutiful. He performs his duties
regularly and sincerely. He does not take rest from his travel. He does not
find mental peace unless and until he discharges his duties. He works just like
machine. He goes from house to house in fair weather of foul. The postman is so
careful that he does not deliver any thing without the legal owner of the thing
to be delivered. Nevertheless he is ill paid. His position is humble in the
society. He brings good news and sometimes ill. He renders an important and
great service to the society. He is such a great friend to us that everyday we
expect his knock on the door.
20. A Street
Hawker p
A street hawker is
a very familiar person both in towns and in villages. He is greatly seen on a
street of a city or, a town, in the compartment of a train, at a bus stand or
at a railway station and at launch and steamer ghats. He is called the vendor
of a variety of things. The thing he generally sells are: - toys, bangles,
ribbons, clothing, sweets, fruits, utensils, fancy goods, newspapers and
domestic articles. Besides of these things, he sells things of our daily
consumption like fish, vegetables, eggs etc. All street hawkers are not alike.
They are of various kinds and classes. Some hawkers move from door to door.
Some of them sell their articles sitting on the footpath. While some street
hawkers standing at important corners of the streets attract the attentions of
the customers by shouting. A street hawker generally carries his goods either
in hands or on the head and sometimes in a small handcart. A street hawker is a very clever person.
He knows how to attract the customers to buy his things. He is very interested
to sell his goods to the women and the children who are easily cheated by him.
When he passes along the streets he makes a peculiar sound to attract the attention
of the customers. He knows the art of attracting the customers. A street hawker may
be illiterate, but he is clever and cunning enough to carry on his trade. He
chooses the hour when the master or the male person is out of doors. He often
cheats customers by selling low quality goods at a high price. A street hawker
does some good to us by bringing things of daily use to our doors. By hawking
things a good many people in our country earn their livelihood and make good
business of their things.
